With Crisis on Infinite Earths looming let’s go back to Smallville.
Premiering in 2001 on the then WB, Smallville was a Television show based on the life of Clark Kent before he became Superman. With the moniker of “No Flights, No Tights” the show gave viewers access to the world of superheroes just as the comic book media boom began. Smallville starred a fresh-faced Tom Welling as Clark Kent and was the prelude to what we know as the Arrowverse. It ran for 10 years with 200+ episodes introducing us to the DC universe and its plethora of characters like Green Arrow, Aquaman, Zatanna, and others. Now with “Crisis on Infinite Earths” crossover event coming up and Tom Welling and Erica Durance reprising their roles as Clark Kent/Superman and Lois Lane respectively I thought it would be cool to open the vault and remise on this show by offering my top 10 Smallville moments. Just a fair warning to all the readers there will be SPOILERS. With that out of the way enjoy…
WARNING SPOILERS BELOW!!!!!
10) Lana Lang discovers Clark’s abilities S6 EP16 “Promise”
This moment was a special one to fans as Lana Lang was the last to discover Clark’s superhuman abilities even though she had her suspicions. These suspicions were confirmed at this moment. Lana had Chole go into Lex’s wine cellar to get his wedding present secretly locking her in there. Unable to contact Lana, Chloe called Clark who rushed in and ripped the door off its hinges. Then, he reconnected it using his heat vision. It is the stunned look on Lana’s face and the satisfaction that she finally knows that makes this moment so special.
9) Clark learns to control Heat Vision S2 EP2 “Heat”
Smallville was chock-full of Superman’s awkward teen moments one of the best examples of that was this moment. Throughout the episode, random fires have been happening around Clark due to his budding powers. This is being caused by the thoughts of sex or attraction to the women in his life. After almost burning down the Talon, Clark decides he is never going to school again. Pa Kent thinks he has discovered why the heat vision flares and offers away to help. Setting up a scarecrow away from the barn he has Clark focus on what he thinks about when the heat vision happens. After an awkward moment with his dad standing next to him, Clark finally begins to understand how to use his new ability. This moment not only builds on the father-son relationship between Clark and his dad it also brings some comedy to awkward moments that we have all had. Bonus points for having Elvis Priestley’s “A Little Less Conversation” in the background.
8) Clark meets the Legion of Superheroes S8 EP11 “Legion”
While “Legion” is not the first team-up of Smallville it is one of the best. Written by DC Comics writer Geoff Johns who had written the Legion of Superheroes comic book. Clark meets the Legionnaires after being attacked by the Persuader. They save him only to find that Brainiac is still a viable threat that they need to “neutralize”. The threat they find is in one Chole Sullivan. Throughout the episode, they make it clear they need to kill Chole to stop Brainiac and since history has never heard of her it’s okay. It’s Clark’s persistence to not kill and find another way that leads to victory and the birth of the 1st rule of the Legion Code “Preserve Life at all Cost”.
7) The First Justice League mission S6 EP11 “Justice”
At this point in the show’s history, Clark has met many extraordinary and future heroes like Cyborg, Aquaman, Impulse and Green Arrow. It is here that we see the birth of something legendary. After Impulse is caught by Lex Luthor and tortured Clark goes in half-cocked to save him from the 33.1 facilities. Like many times in Smallville history, he meets his greatest foe, meteor rock aka Kryptonite. Green Arrow, Aquaman, and Cyborg assault the compound with “Watchtower” on coms where they save Impulse and “Boy Scout” and destroy the facility. This moment is special because it showed us what could be and how the superhero team building could be great. I also love the fact the Bart Allen and Clark couldn’t choose their code names because of their loner nature.
6) The JSA Team-Up and fight with Icicle Jr. S9 EP11 “Absolute Justice”
Geoff Johns returned to give us a team-up with the OG superhero team the Justice Society of America. This moment has both teams coming together after Icicle Jr begins killing the surviving members of the defunct JSA. The Justice League members Clark, Ollie, and J’onn J’onzz aka Martian Manhunter meet with Hawkman, Stargirl, and Dr. Fate to compare notes and stop the killer. The culmination has these heroes fight Icicle who now wields the helmet of Fate after killing Kent Nelson. What we get is a cool slow-motion pan of the heroes using their various powers and weapons in an attempt to stop the villain.
5) Chole realizing that Lois and Clark have a thing for each other S4 EP3 “Façade”
This episode is one of Smallville’s many high school drama/freak of the week episodes. Looking past all that to the end of the episode where Clark is participating in the dunk tank for the football team pep rally. Lois, who is attending Smallville High to complete her last semester of high school, is up. They tease each other a little flirtatiously until Lois ultimately dunks Clark. The real meat here is when Chole looks at her cousin Lois and then Clark and realizes what’s happening. It’s a cute moment for Clark and Lois but a heartbreaking one for Chole who spent the past four seasons trying to get Clark to look at her like that. On top of that, add some early 2000s music with Avril Lavigne’s “My Happy Ending” and you got yourself a certified feels moment.
4) Clark finally telling Lois his secret S10 EP5 “Isis”
This was a big point in the show. Over the past 2 seasons, Clark has been debating whether to tell Lois his secret. With the will, they, won’t they, of past seasons out of the way this was one of the last big major hurdles to jump. On the one side, Lois already knew, discovering his secret in the previous season but was waiting for Clark to decide to trust her. It was a very cute and touching moment when he does tell her and she leaps into his arms.
3) Pa Kent’s Death S5 EP12 “Reckoning”
This moment is both extremely sad and extremely rage-inducing. In this episode, Lana dies and to save her life, Clark goes to the Fortress to visit Jor-El to ask for help. Jor-El offers a time leap that he can do only once and will have major consequences. Clark, for “love”, takes the time leap offer where he saves Lana. This leads to his father running for Senator and winning. However, after the win, Jonathan Kent confronts Lionel Luthor about paying back campaign funds and not being his puppet when Lionel turns the conversation into blackmail about Clark. After a brief scuffle with Luthor, we see Jonathan begin to stutter and stammer, breathing heavy and not walking straight. He powers himself out of the barn to greet his family who was just coming home. He breaks down and as his wife and son hold him, he looks into their eyes lovingly never saying a word and dies.
2) Lex Luthor’s Return S10 EP21 “Finale”
This was the death of brotherhood and the birth of enemies. With the looming threat of Apokolips and Darkseid, Lex Luthor makes his grand return from death and confronts Clark Kent in the now destroyed Luthor Mansion. This confrontation is part of what makes Smallville great as Lex finally embraces his destiny as Clark’s enemy. This was more freighting as Lex knows of Clark’s secrets and has been studying and watching from afar. Michael Rosenbaum shows why he is the definitive Lex Luthor, so cold and callous. Lex tells Clark that every great villain is only defined by their hero. With his last act of friendship, Lex tells Clark that he is the light to save the world from Darkness and Clark tells Lex he is sorry he couldn’t save him.
1) Always Hold on to Smallville S10 EP21 “Finale”
This was the moment 10 years in the making. After all, the teasing, hinting at and lead up to this was it. In the Fortress of Solitude with the threat of Darkseid looming Clark embraces his Kryptonian heritage and his father Jor-El. Jor-El tells Clark he is proud of him and raises the Superman suit from ice. He reminds his son that it was his time with Kents that made him who he is and then the spirit of Pa Kent himself appears and tells Clark to “ Always hold on to Smallville” holding the Superman suit. Taking the suit Clark flies off to face the darkness and I am flying to get tissues to wipe my tears.
Well, that’s it for me peeps, I have to go collect myself after reliving all of those feels but I would love to hear from everyone. What were your favorite Smallville moments? Drop them in the comments section.
