This week, the answer to the question “What is Krypton?” is court intrigue centered around the Voice of Rao. The Voice of Rao needs a scapegoat for the fiasco that was the Rankless Initiative. Lyta-Vex gets blamed and we find out the secret plans of the House of Vex: to wrest control of Kandor from the Voice of Roa. It makes sense. Seg marrying Nyssa aids that because he’s well known among the Rankless. Treachery and deceit abounds.
Another theme this week is love. Seg admits to Nyssa-Vex that he’s in love with Lyta. Dev explains that his faith n Lyta is because of his feelings for here. Down amongst the Rankless, Seg, Kem, and Adam are dealing with Rhom’s eminent death. Kem loves his sister and niece and it’s killing that Rhom dies. Nyssa-Vex is counting on Jayna-Zod’s love for Lyta to turn her to his side.
Adam Strange: You’re gonna get yourself executed and you’re gonna give up our only lead against Brainiac. If Krypton is destroyed, saving Lyta won’t matter.
Seg: A Krypton without Lyta isn’t worth saving
We already had the Guilds and the Rankless in Krypton. We’ve heard about the terrorist organization known as Black Zero. Now there seems to be another faction on the planet. Lead by the suspected new leader of Black Zero, this group is trying to stop Brainiac instead of overthrowing the Voice of Rao. You would thing that these people and Seg could work together, yes? Nope. They kidnap and torture Seg and care nothing for what he has to say. They also badmouth Val-El which probably wasn’t very smart. I’m interested to see if eventually they’ll work together. Also, thanks for the creepy torture bug, really.
The segment of Krypton showing the Nova Cycle ceremony was beautifully put together. The score soothes. When Ona speaks the words of Rao, the scene shifts through the cast of characters—Lyta and Dev sitting in her cell, Seg escaping his captors, and Kem watching little Ona. It felt like the end of one thing and the start of another.
This episode left so many questions. What was this mysterious leader’s relationship to Val-El? Nyssa is manipulating things to overthrow the Voice of Rao, but was she sincere in her outrage at Lyta-Zod being framed? Is the House of Vex in league with Black Zero or working on their own? All in all, I’m eager to see the next chapter in this story. I need answers.
Verdict: 4 out of 5
